Into the Wild: A Two-Day Rainforest & Wildlife Escape
Jungle trails, treetop bridges and the Mandai wildlife parks. Two days trading the skyline for macaques, pandas and hornbills.

The route on the map
5 locationsWe came to Singapore expecting glass towers, and instead spent two days deep in rainforest. As a family used to cool Nordic forests, the humid jungle here was a revelation: monkeys on the trail, pandas behind glass, hornbills overhead. The kids barely mentioned a screen the whole time.
This is a two-day loop built around nature rather than the city. Day one is a proper reservoir hike; day two dives into the Mandai wildlife parks before a final ridgeline walk. Start early each morning, when the animals are active and the heat is still bearable, and carry plenty of water.
- 01Day one, early morning
MacRitchie Reservoir
Caldecott MRT Station MRT · 12.9 min walkStay Half a dayBest Early morningMacRitchie Reservoir gave us our jungle legs. The trails range from wide boardwalks hugging the calm reservoir edge to rugged forest paths that genuinely feel like a jungle hike, and the payoff is the TreeTop Walk, a suspension bridge strung high through the forest canopy.
Wildlife sightings come easily here: long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards and plenty of birds. We spent about three hours under the canopy, hot but shaded from direct sun, and the children loved every monkey we spotted.
Keep food and drinks sealed away in your bag; the macaques are bold and will investigate anything on show.
MacRitchie Reservoir: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there → Singapore Zoo is about 8.3 km from MacRitchie Reservoir; a taxi or bus is your quickest link as there's no MRT at the door.
02Day two, at openingSingapore Zoo
Stay Half a dayBest Morning at openingThe Singapore Zoo is the reason to set an alarm on day two. Its open-concept design separates animals by moats rather than bars, so the free-ranging orangutans and the walk-through Fragile Forest biodome feel genuinely immersive. The whole place is lush, clean and easy to navigate.
We arrived at opening to catch the animals at their most active and beat the heat. Half a day disappears here without effort. The naturalistic habitats really do make it feel less like a zoo and more like a well-kept forest.
Wear good shoes, hydrate and guard against mosquitoes; the grounds are large and the tropical weather is the one real challenge.
Singapore Zoo: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there →Bird Paradise is only about 791 m from Singapore Zoo — an easy walk if the weather is kind, or a short bus hop.
03Day two, late morningBird Paradise
Stay Half a dayBest Morning at openingNext door, Bird Paradise is Mandai's walk-through aviary park, the successor to Jurong Bird Park, with eight lush aviaries recreating world habitats. We wandered among colourful parrots, hornbills, penguins and flamingos, with informative signs that kept the little ones engaged.
The African wetlands and Southeast Asian rainforest zones are the standouts. You could rush it in half a day, but it rewards patience: linger and wait, and the birds come remarkably close.
A free tram service runs between both ends of the park, handy when small legs tire out.

- 04Day two, afternoon
River Wonders
Stay 2–3 hoursBest MorningRiver Wonders completes the Mandai trio, themed around the world's great rivers. The Giant Panda Forest was the undisputed family highlight; the children had never seen a panda and stood transfixed. The Amazon Flooded Forest and its huge freshwater displays are just as memorable.
It is divided into river zones, which makes it easy to explore section by section, and a good chunk of the park is air-conditioned, a blessing after two hot days. The Amazon River Quest boat ride glides you past riverside animals for a final treat.
Pairs naturally with the neighbouring zoo and bird park, but a full day across all three is a lot for young children; pick two if you must.
River Wonders: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there → From River Wonders it's about 14.5 km to Southern Ridges & Henderson Waves — alight at Tiong Bahru MRT Station MRT and it's a 21.9-min walk from there.
05Day two, late afternoon finaleSouthern Ridges & Henderson Waves
Tiong Bahru MRT Station MRT · 21.9 min walkStay 2–3 hoursBest Early morning or late afternoonWe ended the escape on the Southern Ridges, a ridgeline walk linking hilltop parks through the tree canopy. The wave-shaped Henderson Waves, Singapore's highest pedestrian bridge, is the centrepiece, and the elevated Forest Walk delivers views over harbour and greenery.
After two days of caged and cordoned wildlife, it felt right to finish somewhere wilder and free, suspended between canopy and city with birdsong all around. A calm, restful close to a nature-packed weekend.
Go in the late afternoon when the heat eases; the ridge is exposed in places and far more pleasant near dusk.

The verdict
Two days proved Singapore is as much rainforest as it is skyline. A reservoir hike, the three Mandai wildlife parks and a treetop ridge walk gave our family more animals and greenery than we thought a city could hold. Start early, carry water, and let the children set the pace among the monkeys and pandas.

MacRitchie Reservoir
★4.71,485 Google reviews★★★★★Pauline Yoong· 4 months ago“Amazing walk in nature forest. Most of the grounds were forest grounds. Some monkeys were spotted. Was a long walk and spent about 3-4 hours. Was hot and humid but bearable as no direct sunlight inside the forest pathway. Highly recommended.”
★★★★★Benedict Correya· 9 months ago“A beautiful escape from city life. The trails are lush and varied — from wide boardwalks skirting the water, to rugged forest paths that give you a real jungle hike vibe. Wildlife sightings are common — monkeys, lizards, birds — so bring your camera. There are also quieter spots like the Prunus-Petai boardwalks which are perfect for a peaceful walk. Historic too, being Singapore’s oldest reservoir (since 1867) and named after James MacRitchie. Highly recommended for anyone who loves nature, exercise, or just wants a calm break in the morning or late afternoon.”
★★★★★陳可荔· 2 months ago“The full route is about 10 km and takes around 2–3 hours to complete. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in nature on the weekends, but it can get quite crowded, so it may be a bit noisy at times. P.S.: Try not to carry any plastic bags or have can drinks exposed (like 100 Plus or juice). The monkeys have very sharp eyesight and can spot them from far away.”
★★★★★Dru Lu· 5 months ago“Can’t believe the number of Singapore residents that have never been here. A little manicured nature will do everyone some good.😊 tree top walk is very low demand walk that children can do. saw lots of monkeys, chicken, fish, squirrels, monitor lizards.”
★★★★★Anudeep Hegde· 5 months ago“Visiting MacRitchie Reservoir feels like stepping into a hidden green world right in the heart of the city. The trails are peaceful, well-maintained, and surrounded by dense rainforest that instantly calms the mind. Walking across the iconic TreeTop Walk is an unforgettable experience—being at canopy level with birds, monkeys, and towering trees makes you truly appreciate how rich and alive this ecosystem is. What’s remarkable is how Singapore has preserved this natural space while making it accessible and educational for everyone. Perfect for nature lovers, walkers, photographers, and anyone looking to slow down and reconnect with nature. A must-visit reminder that cities and forests can beautifully coexist 🌿✨”
Singapore Zoo
★4.651,982 Google reviews★★★★★Officially Tintin· 4 months ago“I had an amazing experience visiting Singapore Zoo in Singapore. The overall arrangement and planning of the zoo are truly impressive. Everything is well organized, clean, and easy to navigate, making the visit very comfortable and enjoyable. The management is excellent, with proper facilities, clear directions, and well-maintained enclosures for the animals. There are so many different species to see, including many animals I had never seen before in my life. The open and natural-style habitats make the experience even more special. Overall, it is one of the best zoo experiences I have ever had. Highly recommended for families, tourists, and wildlife lovers.”
★★★★Julius Tan· a month ago“I enjoyed my visit to the Singapore Zoo. The grounds are large, lush, clean, and feel relatively natural compared to what I expected. The enclosures seem designed to somewhat replicate the animals’ natural environments rather than simply displaying them openly. One trade-off with this approach is that the animals are not always easy to spot. Some were resting away from view, hiding from the heat, or blending into their surroundings. While this can be slightly disappointing when you are hoping to catch a glimpse of a favourite animal, it also makes the experience feel more natural and less staged. Although the zoo is large, it did not feel crowded even on a public holiday, as both the animals and visitors are fairly well distributed throughout the park. The zoo is still very big, and I ended up walking quite a large number of steps even with tram rides. I would strongly recommend making use of the tram, especially when visiting with family or older relatives, as the walking can add up quickly and become tiring in the heat and humidity. Personally, I found the visit enjoyable but also quite tiring due to the size. If comfort and a more relaxed pace are priorities, I found River Wonders easier to complete and more sheltered, though the zoo offers a wider variety of animals and a more expansive experience.”
★★★★★Lyana S.· 4 months ago“Reviewing the zoo experience - world class. Clean, well designed, with plenty to see and learn. Scenic views and the included tram ride were great. Only downside/challenge; the weather, so prepare for the heat, guard against mosquitos, wear good shoes and hydrate. P.S. Shout out to Jagung the corn snake's friendly and knowledgeable keeper. That engagement was the highlight of my visit! 🐍😃”
★★★★★Siddharth Varma· 5 months ago“Fantastic Day at Singapore Zoo – Go Early for the Best Experience! If you’re planning a visit to the Singapore Zoo, my top tip is to go early – aim for opening time around 8:30 AM. Not only does it help you beat the crowds, but it keeps you ahead of the intense midday heat too. Arriving early means you’ll catch the animals at their most active, as they’re out and about during the cooler morning hours. We saw everything from playful orangutans to majestic elephants without the afternoon lethargy. Don’t miss the morning sea lion splash zone – it’s an absolute highlight! The sea lions put on a show with massive splashes that rival the whale shows at SeaWorld in San Diego (for those who’ve been). Kids and adults alike get soaked and loving it. Loved the freshly squeezed orange juice machines scattered around – super refreshing and a treat we don’t see much back home in India. Perfect for staying hydrated. Getting there is easy too: it’s about 1 hour by public transport from Little India, with smooth connections via MRT train and bus. Super convenient even without a car. Highly recommend for families or animal lovers – 5 stars!”
★★★★★Gillian Parnell· 4 months ago“We last visited Singapore Zoo about 8 years ago. Wow....what an amazing zoo. So many different animals and their living environments are so good. Would definitely visit again during our next holiday. The tram ride is included in ticket price now so makes it easier to move around park and hop off and on as needed. As you enter park look out for map, their is a QR code you can scan, the app will download and its interactive as you walk around the park.”
Bird Paradise
★4.79,590 Google reviews★★★★★Crystal Russom· 4 months ago“Absolutely loved this! Well worth a visit, which took us most of the day. You could rush through it in half a day but you want to allow time to be able to spot all the birds and wait for them to come close. Such a wide variety of birds including from Australia, Asia and Africa, and loved the penguin exhibit where you can see above and below the water. Was very special to see Macaws and other rare birds so close up. Loved that you could walk through the netted areas where they were all just flying around freely. Lots of info and signage to learn about them. Accessible throughout and kid friendly. Bring your own bottle as there is water refill stations, plus a kids swimming area as well to cool off. Air conditioned rooms in between the areas was very welcomed as it's mostly an outside venue, although there's under covered areas in main entry and in some of the exhibits. Food options and places to eat on site as well including full meals or just light snacks and coffee.”
★★★★★Andreas Brunner· a month ago“Bird Paradise Singapore ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Absolute Masterpiece of a Wildlife Park! As avid travelers who have visited countless sanctuaries and wildlife reserves across the globe, we can confidently say that Bird Paradise in Singapore is simply the most beautiful bird park in the world. It is a truly breathtaking experience from start to finish! What makes this park so spectacular is its incredibly thoughtful layout, which is cleverly organized by continents. Instead of traditional enclosures, you walk through massive, immersive aviaries that perfectly replicate the natural habitats of the regions they represent. The scale is unbelievable, and you feel completely transported as you move from one continent to the next. The variety of wildlife is astounding. We were particularly captivated by the magnificent, vibrant parrots, but every single aviary is teeming with incredibly healthy, active birds flying freely right around you. The design allows you to observe them up close in a way that feels completely natural and highly respectful to the animals. The lush landscaping, the giant walk-through environments, and the incredible avian encounters make this a five-star experience in every sense. We have traveled far and wide, but Bird Paradise has set an entirely new global standard. An absolute must-visit”
★★★★★Mohammad Fathullah· a month ago“A wonderful place to see a variety of bird life and very informative diagrams available for the little ones. May get a little crowded, but you can plan ahead to get to the following shows. Free team service is also available to both ends of the park if required. Bonus points for having multiple nursing rooms around the park, and for keeping it sustainable and clean too!”
★★★★★Julian McCracken· a month ago“Awesome park with an incredible variety of birds, from penguins to parrots. We were here for about 5 hours, the place is huge, so plan to spend a good bit of the day. There are nice air-conditioned areas between each park of the park, so you can cool down & read information about the birds. Definitely worth doing in Singapore & excellent if you're a photographer. Be aware that birds may land on you, I had two hopping on me for a while.”
★★★★★Officially Tintin· 4 months ago“I recently visited the Bird Paradise Singapore and it was truly an amazing experience. The park is beautifully designed and extremely well managed, making it comfortable to explore even during long walks. I saw a huge variety of birds that I had never seen before in my life. There are so many types of parrots in all possible colors, from bright red and yellow to deep blue and green, and each section feels lively and vibrant. One of the highlights of the visit was the large indoor waterfall area which creates a rainforest atmosphere and makes the entire environment feel natural and refreshing. The sound of flowing water along with birds flying freely around you makes the experience very immersive. I also loved watching the flamingos standing together in groups, adding a beautiful pink contrast to the greenery around them. The walking trails are well planned and there are many interactive and educational zones where you can learn about different bird species and conservation efforts. Staff members are polite and helpful, and the overall cleanliness is excellent. This is a perfect place for families, nature lovers, and photographers. It is recommended to try booking tickets in advance before going, as it helps save time and avoids long queues at the entrance. The park is spacious, well organized, and enjoyable for all age groups, and it easily takes three to four hours to explore comfortably without feeling rushed.”
River Wonders
★4.512,323 Google reviews★★★★★Andreas Brunner· a month ago“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An Absolute Must-Visit: A Magical Journey Through The World's Rivers! If you are visiting Singapore, River Wonders is an absolute must-see! This extraordinary park is brilliantly designed, taking you on an immersive journey inspired by the most iconic rivers of the world, from the Nile to the Yangtze. Every single zone is beautifully themed and educational. The absolute highlight of our trip was seeing the 15 magnificent manatees gliding gracefully through the massive freshwater aquarium. It is truly a mesmerizing sight to watch these gentle giants! Of course, we cannot forget the stars of the show — the two adorable giant pandas. Watching them munch on bamboo in their lush, climate-controlled enclosure was an unforgettable experience. Another thrilling part of our visit was the Amazon River Quest boat ride. Floating along the water while spotting amazing wildlife like jaguars and capybaras made us feel like we were on a real jungle expedition. There is just so much more to discover at every turn! Overall, this park is beautifully maintained, extremely engaging, and truly super beautiful. I highly recommend it for nature lovers and anyone looking for a unique adventure. Five out of five bright shining stars! Truly amazing!”
★★★★★Julius Tan· a month ago“River Wonders is divided into several zones themed around major rivers around the world, which makes the park feel more varied and easier to explore section by section rather than as one long continuous route. Compared to the zoo, a significant portion of the park is air-conditioned and sheltered, making the experience noticeably more comfortable, especially in Singapore’s heat and humidity. Areas such as the giant panda enclosure and the aquarium sections housing the manatees offer a welcome break from the outdoors. Some of the highlights include the giant pandas, capybaras, giant river otters and manatees, and my personal favourite - the red panda. I found River Wonders more relaxing and easier to complete compared to the zoo while still offering enough variety to keep the visit interesting. It is also a good option for families with elderly visitors or for those who prefer a more comfortable pace.”
★★★★★Pretty Epic Getaways· a month ago“PANDA 🐼 LOVERSSS, ASSEMBLE!!! River Wonders Singapore felt like stepping into a magical jungle adventure full of cute animal friends 🌿🐼 Visited with my wife last June, and the absolute highlight was seeing giant pandas for the very first time ever. They looked like giant fluffy marshmallows just munching bamboo, taking cozy naps, and rolling around so adorably that we couldn’t stop smiling. 🐾 The whole park feels bright, fun, and super relaxing, almost like exploring a storybook rainforest. The river-themed zones, aquarium exhibits, and boat ride make every corner feel exciting and full of surprises. There are so many amazing animals to spot, and everything is clean, colorful, and easy to enjoy. If you’re visiting Singapore, this place is a must-see — especially for panda lovers and little explorers. Just be prepared to leave with hundreds of panda photos, happy memories, and a big love for animals everywhere. ❤️ Pro-Tip: You can buy all inclusive pass for Mandai Wildlife reserve if you are planning to visit all 5 parks which will save you approximately 30%.”
★★★★★Barath Kumar R· 3 months ago“River Wonders Singapore was a truly memorable and unique experience during our trip. One of the biggest highlights for us was seeing a panda for the very first time. It was such a special moment, and watching the panda up close felt amazing. Another standout part of the visit was the giant freshwater fishes. Seeing such large and rare species in well-designed enclosures was both fascinating and educational. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, giving you a chance to learn about different river ecosystems from around the world. The entire place is clean, well-maintained, and easy to explore at a comfortable pace. The layout is well planned, and the atmosphere is calm and enjoyable, making it suitable for families and kids as well. It’s a different kind of wildlife experience compared to a traditional zoo, which makes it even more interesting. You not only get to see animals but also understand their natural habitats better. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and definitely worth visiting. Seeing the panda and the giant fishes made it extra special and something we will always remember.”
★★★★Tzzz· a month ago“Visited on a weekday morning right after it opened for the day, so it was quite empty, save for occassional tourists. Honestly, this place is quite underrated, there are many cool animals to see. I was also lucky enough to see both Kai Kai and Jia Jia 🙏 I would recommend spending the extra $5 for the amazon river quest as well, as you get to see more animals like flamingoes, capybaras and even a jaguar. Overall, quite a decent attraction to visit. It is also mostly sheltered so the sun isnt shining down on you during your whole visit 🙏”
Southern Ridges & Henderson Waves
★4.7633 Google reviews★★★★★Cao Cao Akatsuki· 4 months ago“Henderson Waves is a beautifully designed wooden pedestrian bridge crossing Henderson Road, known for its distinctive wave-like architectural structure. The bridge sits high above the road, offering nice views toward the sea and surrounding greenery. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing, making it a great spot for a morning or evening walk, light jogging, or simply enjoying the breeze and scenery. A pleasant stop along the Southern Ridges trail.”
★★★★★Abdulhayy Johnson (AJ)· 2 months ago“Easy to access from the bus stop below then up the long staggered staircase. The whole area is beautiful and full of greenery and nature, including Mt Fabre park, Henderson Waves and Forest Walk. Peaceful enough to hear the birds, grasshoppers and even the cockerel in the morning. Plenty of signs around so not easy to get lost. Lush trees with cooler climate compared to urban concrete areas.”
★★★★★Abroad Travel· 5 months ago“Henderson Waves — Singapore Have you reconnected with nature lately? There is a place where the horizon does not end at the skyline — it bends. You walk suspended between canopy and city, never fully belonging to either. HIGHEST DESIGN: Henderson Waves, the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore, carries you into that in-between space along the Southern Ridges. Its rising timber arcs form a moving rhythm above the treetops, opening long views across forest, harbor, and distant towers. Step onto the deck and the intention becomes clear. The wooden path guides movement without effort; each curve anticipates shade, airflow, and pause. The waves are not decoration — they shelter. Sun or rain, the walk continues. WAVE-LIKE: Walkers, runners, residents, and visitors share the span. Inside every crest, built-in seating invites you to stop. Cameras sit quietly overhead for safety, while beneath them people stretch, rest, talk softly, or simply look outward at green canopy meeting skyline. The bridge slows you down without asking. PICNIC: Further along, timber seating opens into pockets surrounded by trees. Conversations lower. Many bring small meals and leave nothing behind, using the designated bins. The calm exists because it is respected. CONNECTIONS - 10KM: Paths extend outward to Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve. The bridge becomes a hinge — city loosening into forest rather than ending at it. STROLL BY: No matter your reason for visiting Singapore, this stop is difficult to overlook. I spent time here, observing people — laughter across ages, photos and videos constantly taken, but always with consideration for others. Yet the dominant sound remains wind moving through leaves and footsteps on wood. One of Singapore’s quiet crown jewels. You arrive for the view. You remember the feeling — the sky lowering, the city receding, and for a brief distance, you belong to both.”
★★★★★General Twilight· 3 months ago“Henderson waves bridge was built to connect mount faber to another park in singapore. It is designed to look like waves and it is a wooden bridge. From this bridge you can catch a great view of the city skylines of singapore. It has no shelther so be prepared to take an umbrella when coming to this place. In additiom there is a cable car nearby and it is within a 10 minute walk of the bridge. A great stop for tourist to catch a great view of singapore city.”
