I travel with a long lens and a lot of patience, and Singapore turned out to be a generous place for both. In one day I went from a purpose-built aviary to wild rainforest to garden lakes, chasing colour, movement and the good light in between.

The plan was simple: start where the birds are guaranteed, then move into the wild where they are earned. Mornings are everything for this, so I front-loaded the day, kept quiet, and let the subjects come to me.

I began at Bird Paradise in Mandai, the walk-through successor to Jurong Bird Park, with eight immersive aviaries recreating habitats from around the world. Parrots, hornbills, penguins and flamingos are all here, and the African wetlands and Southeast Asian rainforest zones are a photographer's dream.

This is a half-day on its own if you let it be. I slowed right down, waited for the birds to come close, and filled a memory card before lunch. The variety, from Australia to Asia to Africa, is extraordinary.

Arrive at opening; the birds are most active early, and you will want time to wait for them to come close.

From guaranteed birds to wild ones: MacRitchie Reservoir trades the aviary for genuine rainforest, with boardwalks by the water and forest paths beneath the canopy. Wildlife sightings are common here, so a camera is essential; monkeys, monitor lizards and rich birdlife all show up.

The shade makes the humidity bearable, and the quiet stretches away from the crowds are where the patient photographer is rewarded. I kept still, listened, and let the forest reveal itself.

Keep any food and drinks sealed and out of sight; the long-tailed macaques are quick and curious.

By late afternoon I was at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, whose lakes, heritage trees and preserved rainforest patch make it a surprisingly rich urban wildlife spot. Swan Lake and the shaded paths are good hunting grounds, and there is plenty of birdlife alongside the odd monitor lizard.

It is calm, beautifully kept and free for the main grounds, which makes it an easy place to linger for the softer, late light. I worked the lake edges as the day cooled.

The main gardens are free; the softer late-afternoon light is kinder for photography than harsh midday sun.

Gardens By the Bay MRT Station MRT · 8 min walkStay 3–4 hoursBest Late afternoon into the evening

I closed at Gardens by the Bay, less for wildlife than for the spectacle: the Supertree Grove lighting up, the OCBC Skyway threading between the giant vertical gardens, and the conservatories glowing after dark. It is a change of subject from feathers to architecture, and a stunning one.

After a day of patient, quiet shooting, the Supertrees at dusk were a bold, easy win to end on. A fitting finale for anyone travelling with a camera.

Late afternoon into evening lets you catch daylight and the lit Supertrees in one visit.

The verdict

A day that runs from certainty to wildness and back to spectacle: a world-class aviary, a genuine rainforest reservoir, a heritage garden and a glowing waterfront finale. ★★★★★Crystal Russom· 4 months agoAbsolutely loved this! Well worth a visit, which took us most of the day. You could rush through it in half a day but you want to allow time to be able to spot all the birds and wait for them to come close. Such a wide variety of birds including from Australia, Asia and Africa, and loved the penguin exhibit where you can see above and below the water. Was very special to see Macaws and other rare birds so close up. Loved that you could walk through the netted areas where they were all just flying around freely. Lots of info and signage to learn about them. Accessible throughout and kid friendly. Bring your own bottle as there is water refill stations, plus a kids swimming area as well to cool off. Air conditioned rooms in between the areas was very welcomed as it's mostly an outside venue, although there's under covered areas in main entry and in some of the exhibits. Food options and places to eat on site as well including full meals or just light snacks and coffee.
★★★★★Andreas Brunner· a month agoBird Paradise Singapore ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Absolute Masterpiece of a Wildlife Park! As avid travelers who have visited countless sanctuaries and wildlife reserves across the globe, we can confidently say that Bird Paradise in Singapore is simply the most beautiful bird park in the world. It is a truly breathtaking experience from start to finish! What makes this park so spectacular is its incredibly thoughtful layout, which is cleverly organized by continents. Instead of traditional enclosures, you walk through massive, immersive aviaries that perfectly replicate the natural habitats of the regions they represent. The scale is unbelievable, and you feel completely transported as you move from one continent to the next. The variety of wildlife is astounding. We were particularly captivated by the magnificent, vibrant parrots, but every single aviary is teeming with incredibly healthy, active birds flying freely right around you. The design allows you to observe them up close in a way that feels completely natural and highly respectful to the animals. The lush landscaping, the giant walk-through environments, and the incredible avian encounters make this a five-star experience in every sense. We have traveled far and wide, but Bird Paradise has set an entirely new global standard. An absolute must-visit
★★★★★Mohammad Fathullah· a month agoA wonderful place to see a variety of bird life and very informative diagrams available for the little ones. May get a little crowded, but you can plan ahead to get to the following shows. Free team service is also available to both ends of the park if required. Bonus points for having multiple nursing rooms around the park, and for keeping it sustainable and clean too!
★★★★★Julian McCracken· a month agoAwesome park with an incredible variety of birds, from penguins to parrots. We were here for about 5 hours, the place is huge, so plan to spend a good bit of the day. There are nice air-conditioned areas between each park of the park, so you can cool down & read information about the birds. Definitely worth doing in Singapore & excellent if you're a photographer. Be aware that birds may land on you, I had two hopping on me for a while.
★★★★★Officially Tintin· 4 months agoI recently visited the Bird Paradise Singapore and it was truly an amazing experience. The park is beautifully designed and extremely well managed, making it comfortable to explore even during long walks. I saw a huge variety of birds that I had never seen before in my life. There are so many types of parrots in all possible colors, from bright red and yellow to deep blue and green, and each section feels lively and vibrant. One of the highlights of the visit was the large indoor waterfall area which creates a rainforest atmosphere and makes the entire environment feel natural and refreshing. The sound of flowing water along with birds flying freely around you makes the experience very immersive. I also loved watching the flamingos standing together in groups, adding a beautiful pink contrast to the greenery around them. The walking trails are well planned and there are many interactive and educational zones where you can learn about different bird species and conservation efforts. Staff members are polite and helpful, and the overall cleanliness is excellent. This is a perfect place for families, nature lovers, and photographers. It is recommended to try booking tickets in advance before going, as it helps save time and avoids long queues at the entrance. The park is spacious, well organized, and enjoyable for all age groups, and it easily takes three to four hours to explore comfortably without feeling rushed.

★★★★★Pauline Yoong· 4 months agoAmazing walk in nature forest. Most of the grounds were forest grounds. Some monkeys were spotted. Was a long walk and spent about 3-4 hours. Was hot and humid but bearable as no direct sunlight inside the forest pathway. Highly recommended.
★★★★★Benedict Correya· 9 months agoA beautiful escape from city life. The trails are lush and varied — from wide boardwalks skirting the water, to rugged forest paths that give you a real jungle hike vibe. Wildlife sightings are common — monkeys, lizards, birds — so bring your camera. There are also quieter spots like the Prunus-Petai boardwalks which are perfect for a peaceful walk. Historic too, being Singapore’s oldest reservoir (since 1867) and named after James MacRitchie. Highly recommended for anyone who loves nature, exercise, or just wants a calm break in the morning or late afternoon.
★★★★★陳可荔· 2 months agoThe full route is about 10 km and takes around 2–3 hours to complete. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in nature on the weekends, but it can get quite crowded, so it may be a bit noisy at times. P.S.: Try not to carry any plastic bags or have can drinks exposed (like 100 Plus or juice). The monkeys have very sharp eyesight and can spot them from far away.
★★★★★Dru Lu· 5 months agoCan’t believe the number of Singapore residents that have never been here. A little manicured nature will do everyone some good.😊 tree top walk is very low demand walk that children can do. saw lots of monkeys, chicken, fish, squirrels, monitor lizards.
★★★★★Anudeep Hegde· 5 months agoVisiting MacRitchie Reservoir feels like stepping into a hidden green world right in the heart of the city. The trails are peaceful, well-maintained, and surrounded by dense rainforest that instantly calms the mind. Walking across the iconic TreeTop Walk is an unforgettable experience—being at canopy level with birds, monkeys, and towering trees makes you truly appreciate how rich and alive this ecosystem is. What’s remarkable is how Singapore has preserved this natural space while making it accessible and educational for everyone. Perfect for nature lovers, walkers, photographers, and anyone looking to slow down and reconnect with nature. A must-visit reminder that cities and forests can beautifully coexist 🌿✨

★★★★★yoshita singh· 6 months agoSingapore Botanic Gardens is a true green paradise in the heart of the city. It is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and perfect for relaxing away from the busy urban life. The greenery, flowers, and open spaces make it feel refreshing and calming. The National Orchid Garden inside is especially stunning, with a wide variety of colorful and rare orchids. Every corner of the garden feels like a postcard spot, ideal for photography and quiet walks. It’s a perfect place for morning walks, picnics, or just to enjoy nature. The Botanic Gardens show how beautifully Singapore balances modern city life with nature and heritage.
★★★★★Andrea Ang· 2 months agoI was really amazed by this Botanic Garden, and I got so lucky to be invited to a picnic there. The place felt so peaceful and relaxing. There’s even a free cold water fountain and vending machines around the area, which I found really convenient. I also saw a lot of monitor lizards, wild chickens, and even robotic grass cutters maintaining the garden—which was honestly so cute to watch. There are dining spots nearby as well, so it’s easy to spend hours there just walking around and enjoying the atmosphere. What I also appreciated was how convenient it is for tourists. Both entrances are connected to train and bus stations, making the place very accessible. Being there felt like a slowdown from normal city life. I even heard that picnics aren’t really a Singaporean thing, which surprised me because the place is perfect for it. I genuinely hope locals get to enjoy places like this as much as tourists do.
★★★★★M Molly· a month agoThis place is a must-visit when in Singapore! It’s incredible how lush and green it is despite being in the middle of the city. Massive heritage trees, lovely lakes, and free entry for the main area. We spotted so many birds and even a few lizards on our walk. The shaded paths make it comfortable even in the heat. Bring water and comfortable shoes — you’ll want to explore for hours.
★★★★Jayasankar P M· 5 months agoA beautiful and peaceful green escape in the city. The gardens are very well maintained and perfect for a relaxed walk. Swan Lake and Symphony Lake are lovely spots to unwind and take photos. The National Orchid Garden is the highlight. The orchid collection is stunning and worth the ticket. The Rainforest Trail was closed during my visit in the first week of February 2026, which was a bit disappointing. Main garden entry is free; only the Orchid Garden requires a ticket. Cafés are available inside, and it’s best to visit in the morning or evening to avoid the heat. Highly recommended for a calm nature break in Singapore.
★★★★★Ms World Traveler· 2 months agoI loved my visit here. The place is well maintained with a lot of lovely greenery- trees, plants, flowers, especially orchids. I saw some amazing plants that are quite large in comparison to other parts of the world for the same species. It's quite strict in terms of rules are posted everywhere. Overall, as long as you stick to the paths, youll see a lot of lovely green space.
