Singapore for Free: A Backpacker's Two-Day Budget Adventure
Parks, murals and skyline views that cost nothing — how to fill two full days in Singapore without opening your wallet.
Told by Minh, backpacking from Ho Chi Minh City. Transport, timing and stay tips are from live Singapore data; visitor quotes are real Google reviews.
The route on the map
6 locationsPeople warned me Singapore would drain my backpacker budget in a day. They were wrong. I spent two days here on almost nothing but bus fares and a couple of hawker meals, and honestly it was one of the richest city stops of my whole trip. The trick is leaning into the parks, the waterfronts and the free views.
This route strings together the greatest free hits — a proper skyline photo at the Merlion, a leafy hilltop, a ridgeline walk, a long stretch of coast, a lane full of murals, and a rooftop dam at sunset. Comfortable shoes and a refillable water bottle are the only real cost. Here is exactly how I paced it.
- 01Day one, first light
Merlion Park
Raffles Place MRT Station MRT · 7.8 min walkStay 30–45 minutesBest Early morning or eveningStart at Merlion Park before the tour buses arrive. The 8.6-metre Merlion spouts across Marina Bay straight toward Marina Bay Sands, and in the early morning you get that postcard skyline almost to yourself. There is even a smaller 'Merlion cub' tucked behind the original if you look. Fifteen minutes of walking and you have your defining Singapore photo, free.
Come as close to dawn as you can — by mid-morning the waterfront fills with crowds jostling for the same shot.
Merlion Park: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there → From Merlion Park it's about 1.3 km to Fort Canning Park — alight at Fort Canning MRT Station MRT and it's a 6.7-min walk from there.
02Day one, mid-morningFort Canning Park
Fort Canning MRT Station MRT · 6.7 min walkStay 1–2 hoursBest Cooler morning or late afternoonA short walk inland brings you up to Fort Canning Park, a green hill layered with colonial history above the museum district. The spiral Fort Canning Tree Tunnel is the famous photo, but I loved just wandering past the old Fort Gate and the remnants of British fortifications. It is surprisingly quiet for somewhere so central.
Do this in the cooler morning and carry water — the paths climb and Singapore's humidity is no joke.
Fort Canning Park: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there →From Fort Canning Park it's about 3.7 km to Southern Ridges & Henderson Waves — alight at Tiong Bahru MRT Station MRT and it's a 21.9-min walk from there.
03Day one, afternoonSouthern Ridges & Henderson Waves
Tiong Bahru MRT Station MRT · 21.9 min walkStay 2–3 hoursBest Early morning or late afternoonHop across to the Southern Ridges for the walk that defines this trail: the wave-shaped Henderson Waves, Singapore's highest pedestrian bridge, plus the elevated Forest Walk winding through the canopy. You get hilltop views over the harbour and city without paying a cent, and the greenery keeps the heat bearable.
Start from the bus stop below Henderson Waves and walk up — it saves you doubling back later.

- 04Day two, morning
East Coast Park
Marine Parade MRT Station MRT · 12.3 min walkStay 2–3 hoursBest Early morning or eveningBegin the second day out at East Coast Park, a 15km ribbon of coast built for cycling, skating and lazing on sandy lagoons. Even on foot it is a gorgeous stretch — sea breeze, joggers, and hawker centres right on the shore if you want a cheap breakfast with a view of the water.
Walk toward the quieter far end of the beach if you want the sea more or less to yourself.
East Coast Park: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there → From East Coast Park it's about 5.9 km to Haji Lane — alight at Bugis MRT Station MRT and it's a 6-min walk from there.
05Day two, afternoonHaji Lane
Bugis MRT Station MRT · 6 min walkStay 1–2 hoursBest Afternoon into eveningSwing into Kampong Glam for Haji Lane, a narrow shophouse alley splashed with street-art murals. It is browsing heaven for a backpacker — indie boutiques, quirky homeware, cosy cafés — and you can happily spend an hour just wandering and shooting the colourful walls without spending anything.
Haji Lane: photos, reviews, hours & how to get there →From Haji Lane it's about 2.6 km to Marina Barrage — alight at Gardens By the Bay MRT Station MRT and it's a 9.3-min walk from there.
06Day two, late afternoon into sunsetMarina Barrage
Gardens By the Bay MRT Station MRT · 9.3 min walkStay 1–2 hoursBest Late afternoon to sunsetEnd at Marina Barrage, a working dam topped by a wide green rooftop lawn that locals use for kite-flying and picnics. The panorama sweeps right across Marina Bay to the skyline, and catching sunset here — free, breezy, unhurried — is the perfect close to two budget days.
Bring something to sit on and time your arrival for late afternoon to catch the light change over the bay.

The verdict
Two full days, a genuinely spectacular city, and barely a dollar spent beyond transport and street food. Singapore rewards travellers who walk and look up. Wear good shoes, chase the cooler hours, and you will leave with a camera roll that looks anything but budget.

★★★★★Yulianto Nugroho· 2 months ago“A very nice place to chills out in the afternoon and to catch sunset. There is some food stalls near the area. Good place to take a memorable photo of Singapore”
★★★★★SB· 5 months ago“Great view of some of the buildings of the CBD from here once you get rid of all the instagram heroes. Come early, that’s the best time for the sun anyway”
★★★★★Carpe Diem Pirate· 9 months ago“Great nightlife spot in Singapore — easily one of the best things to do after dark. It’s not hot, the atmosphere is buzzing, and the vibes are just right for a chill, memorable night out.”

Fort Canning Park
★4.611,937 Google reviews★★★★★Masanori Yamazaki· 2 months ago“I visited here for a morning walk. The park is quite large, so you'll definitely work up a sweat walking around. I highly recommend bringing a water bottle. It's full of nature, and spotting a wild chicken was a fun experience.”
★★★★★JR FF· 2 months ago“Relaxing spot, perfect for a nature retreat while in the city. A lot less crowded than you'd expect, considering it's central spot. It's a collection of spots really, rather than a single destination, with lifestyle dining, museums, educational spice gardens, wedding photo destinations, or just a plain picnic spot. It's much less of a climb than you'd think, is great all around. View from the top is a comforting one, nice to see the cityscape. One interesting thing is how it's occupied mainly by maids, foreign workers, and tourists. As an aside, Chinese tourists and their themed outfits are kinda fun! Maybe we should look into that. Under-utilized by Singaporeans - thats your tax dollars at work you know, might as well use it.”
★★★★★Yeni Yeni· a month ago“We had a great time at Fort Canning Park, especially at the children's playground area. The kids really enjoyed the swings and slides, and the playground was well designed for young children. There was also a wash basin nearby, making it easy to clean up after playing. The facilities were convenient and family-friendly. The location is very close to Fort Canning MRT stop. The park itself is spacious, green, and well maintained, offering a nice escape from the city. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to explore all areas of the park, so we definitely plan to return on our next visit to Singapore. Overall, Fort Canning Park is a wonderful destination for families with children who want to enjoy outdoor play, nature, and a relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommended for a few hours of family fun”
★★★★★DIMOXA Myra· 2 months ago“Fort Canning Park is a lush green destination right in the heart of the city, notable for its tranquil atmosphere and historical significance. It's perfect for strolling, relaxing, and taking photos, especially with its famous "tree tunnel" viewpoint.”
★★★★★Shaun L· 8 months ago“Enjoyed a sunny but hot walk around the park to take in its history and also Raffles Garden. Some good views and lots of plants and trees to admire. The main draw for us though was the heritage centre which contains a fair bit of military history relating to Singapore.”
Southern Ridges & Henderson Waves
★4.7633 Google reviews★★★★★Cao Cao Akatsuki· 4 months ago“Henderson Waves is a beautifully designed wooden pedestrian bridge crossing Henderson Road, known for its distinctive wave-like architectural structure. The bridge sits high above the road, offering nice views toward the sea and surrounding greenery. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing, making it a great spot for a morning or evening walk, light jogging, or simply enjoying the breeze and scenery. A pleasant stop along the Southern Ridges trail.”
★★★★★Abdulhayy Johnson (AJ)· 2 months ago“Easy to access from the bus stop below then up the long staggered staircase. The whole area is beautiful and full of greenery and nature, including Mt Fabre park, Henderson Waves and Forest Walk. Peaceful enough to hear the birds, grasshoppers and even the cockerel in the morning. Plenty of signs around so not easy to get lost. Lush trees with cooler climate compared to urban concrete areas.”
★★★★★Abroad Travel· 5 months ago“Henderson Waves — Singapore Have you reconnected with nature lately? There is a place where the horizon does not end at the skyline — it bends. You walk suspended between canopy and city, never fully belonging to either. HIGHEST DESIGN: Henderson Waves, the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore, carries you into that in-between space along the Southern Ridges. Its rising timber arcs form a moving rhythm above the treetops, opening long views across forest, harbor, and distant towers. Step onto the deck and the intention becomes clear. The wooden path guides movement without effort; each curve anticipates shade, airflow, and pause. The waves are not decoration — they shelter. Sun or rain, the walk continues. WAVE-LIKE: Walkers, runners, residents, and visitors share the span. Inside every crest, built-in seating invites you to stop. Cameras sit quietly overhead for safety, while beneath them people stretch, rest, talk softly, or simply look outward at green canopy meeting skyline. The bridge slows you down without asking. PICNIC: Further along, timber seating opens into pockets surrounded by trees. Conversations lower. Many bring small meals and leave nothing behind, using the designated bins. The calm exists because it is respected. CONNECTIONS - 10KM: Paths extend outward to Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve. The bridge becomes a hinge — city loosening into forest rather than ending at it. STROLL BY: No matter your reason for visiting Singapore, this stop is difficult to overlook. I spent time here, observing people — laughter across ages, photos and videos constantly taken, but always with consideration for others. Yet the dominant sound remains wind moving through leaves and footsteps on wood. One of Singapore’s quiet crown jewels. You arrive for the view. You remember the feeling — the sky lowering, the city receding, and for a brief distance, you belong to both.”
★★★★★General Twilight· 3 months ago“Henderson waves bridge was built to connect mount faber to another park in singapore. It is designed to look like waves and it is a wooden bridge. From this bridge you can catch a great view of the city skylines of singapore. It has no shelther so be prepared to take an umbrella when coming to this place. In additiom there is a cable car nearby and it is within a 10 minute walk of the bridge. A great stop for tourist to catch a great view of singapore city.”
★★★★★CK C· 6 months ago“A scenic spot along the Southern Ridges, especially during sunsets. You can access it via a long flight of staircase from the bus stop ‘14059 Bef Telok Blangah Hts’ along Henderson Rd.”
East Coast Park
★4.632,005 Google reviews★★★★★Multi Vitamins· a month ago“East Coast area and wanted to share my thoughts on East Coast Park. It remains one of the best-maintained spaces in Singapore, and its extensive connectivity to other parks makes it an ideal destination for long walks or cycling trips. I particularly enjoyed the ability to ride my bicycle all the way to Gardens by the Bay via the park connector; it was always such a calm and refreshing experience. The park offers a wonderful atmosphere with its blend of lush greenery and sea views. It is exceptionally well-equipped for families and fitness enthusiasts, featuring dedicated exercise stations, children’s play areas, and wide, separate paths for cycling and walking that prevent the space from feeling crowded. Beyond the scenery, the facilities are excellent. There are convenient bicycle rentals, a variety of dining options in the restaurant area where you can enjoy the sea breeze, and well-maintained BBQ pits and shelters. For those interested in staying longer, the designated camping areas are a great touch, and I’ve always found the washrooms and bathing facilities to be very clean. Overall, it is a perfect place to relax, exercise, and enjoy nature, whether you are visiting alone or with friends and family.”
★★★★★chaami de silva· 5 months ago“East Coast Park is one of the best and most well-maintained parks in Singapore. It is a very big park and is beautifully connected to other parks across Singapore, making it perfect for long walks or cycling trips. The park has lots of nice scenery, with greenery and sea views that make the atmosphere very relaxing. In some areas, there are exercise equipment stations and children’s play areas, which are great for families and fitness lovers. There is a dedicated cycling path and a separate walking path, both of which are wide and well maintained, so it never feels crowded. You can also rent bicycles, and there are fun activities and attractions that bring in many people. The park has a restaurant area where you can enjoy a variety of foods while feeling the cool sea breeze. You can book BBQ pits, and there are huts available for shelter in case of rain. There are also designated camping areas for those who want to stay overnight. I used to live near the East Coast area, and what I loved most was riding my bicycle all the way to Gardens by the Bay, as the park connector makes this possible. It was always a calm and refreshing experience. On top of that, the washrooms and bathing areas are very clean and well maintained. Overall, East Coast Park is a perfect place to relax, exercise, eat, and enjoy nature, whether alone, with friends, or with family.”

★★★★★Tose· 2 months ago“This is one of the most beautiful parks I’ve ever visited in Singapore. It has plenty of trees, clean walking paths, and comfortable benches where people can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. I especially recommend visiting in the morning because the weather is cooler and the park feels very refreshing There are also many trash bins around the park, so it is convenient for visitors who bring drinks or snacks. The area is well maintained, clean, and perfect for taking a walk, reading a book, or simply spending quiet time away from the busy city. 🌳”

Marina Barrage
★4.78,783 Google reviews★★★★★Loki· a month ago“Marina Barrage is one of Singapore’s most complete attractions, combining stunning waterfront views, green open spaces, sustainability education, and excellent facilities all in one place. Whether you’re looking for a scenic walk, a running route, a family outing, or simply a place to relax, Marina Barrage delivers What impressed me most was the variety of experiences packed into a single destination. The dam itself offers beautiful views of both the calm reservoir and the open sea, making it a fantastic place for walking, jogging, or enjoying the sea breeze. The viewpoint overlooking the southern waters is equally rewarding, with panoramic views of ships, turquoise waters, and dramatic cloud formations that make for great photography The iconic Green Roof is another highlight. The large grassy lawn attracts families flying kites, friends having picnics, photographers, and visitors simply enjoying the skyline. The views of Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and the Singapore Flyer are spectacular, especially on a clear day For those interested in sustainability and engineering, the Sustainable Singapore Gallery adds another dimension to the visit. It provides a fascinating look at Singapore’s water management, climate resilience, and sustainability efforts. While some exhibits require a fair bit of reading, the gallery is well-designed and informative, and guided tours are available for visitors who want a deeper understanding I also appreciated the thoughtful design of the entire facility. There are plenty of sheltered areas to escape the midday heat, spacious walkways, and numerous vantage points to admire both the city skyline and the surrounding waters. The architecture itself is impressive and reflects Singapore’s ability to blend functionality with public spaces”
★★★★★Aishaary· 6 months ago“For a calm and enjoyable family vacation, this is one of the best spots in Singapore. I arrived at 9 a.m., and there was no crowd at all—I was even alone there. That was exactly what I wanted, so my family could freely take photos together with a panoramic view of Singapore’s iconic buildings. Even as it got closer to midday, the breeze here was pleasantly refreshing.”
★★★★★Dan Lim· 2 months ago“One of the best place in Singapore to chill in the evening. You get good views almost all around the grass platform. People flying kites and the night view is also great. We had picnic here a few times and always a good time spent.”
★★★★★Multi Vitamins· a month ago“Marina Barrage in Singapore and wanted to share my impressions of the site. It is a remarkable location that successfully combines essential infrastructure with recreational space. The views of the city skyline and Marina Bay Sands are particularly impressive, especially during sunset, making it an ideal spot for a picnic or kite flying. Beyond the leisure aspects, the sustainable engineering of the barrage is quite significant. It plays a vital role in local water supply and flood control, and the on-site Sustainable Singapore Gallery provides excellent insights into the country's conservation efforts. If you plan to visit, please be aware that it can become quite crowded on weekends. Additionally, there is limited shade available, so I would recommend bringing sunscreen or an umbrella. Overall, it is a highly recommended destination for anyone who appreciates scenic green spaces and innovative urban design.”
★★★★★Paradee Saikumfu· 3 months ago“Great spot for a relaxing day out. The views of the city skyline and Marina Bay are stunning, especially at sunset. It’s perfect for picnics, kite flying, and leisurely walks. Facilities are clean and well-maintained, and the atmosphere is family-friendly. A must-visit for both locals and tourists!”
