Victoria Concert Hall: the concert-goer’s guide

The 673-seat home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, in a 1905 civic landmark.

Victoria Concert Hall is the home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, occupying half of the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall complex on Empress Place — a 1905 memorial hall and 1862 town hall joined by a clock tower, and one of the oldest performance buildings in Singapore.

A restoration completed in 2014 rebuilt the hall's acoustics while keeping the colonial shell, and the result is an intimate, warm room for orchestral and chamber music. It stands on the Singapore River beside the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Fullerton, so a concert here comes with the most photogenic ten-minute walk in the city.

How the seating works

Stalls and a single balcony, all seated. At 673 seats, every seat is close to the platform.

Arriving

Raffles Place and City Hall are each about a nine-minute walk — the Raffles Place route crosses the Singapore River on Cavenagh Bridge. Arrive 20–30 minutes early: latecomers are held outside until an interval or a suitable pause.

After the show

The crowd is small and the surroundings are the best part of the evening: walk the river to Boat Quay or Clarke Quay for a late drink, or cross to the Merlion and the bay. Raffles Place and City Hall stations are both minutes away.

Things worth knowing

  • The complex holds two venues — the Concert Hall and the Victoria Theatre — behind one façade. Check your ticket.
  • SSO concerts often start at 7.30pm; the surrounding restaurants are busiest just before, so eat early or after.
  • The river walk from Clarke Quay is a lovely 15 minutes if the weather holds.
