The story
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay opened in 2002 as Singapore's flagship performing arts centre on the Marina Bay waterfront. Its twin domes, clad in spiky aluminium sunshades, quickly earned it the affectionate nickname 'the Durian' for their resemblance to the spiky tropical fruit. The centre houses a concert hall and theatre alongside smaller studios and outdoor stages, and it hosts thousands of performances each year, many of them free.
