The venue: Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's national performing arts centre, opened in 2002 and known to everyone as "the durian" for its spiked aluminium shades. The Concert Hall (1,630 seats) is the country's finest acoustic room; the Theatre (1,948 seats) next door takes musicals and larger contemporary shows.

The Concert Hall is a shoebox-with-galleries design: stalls, three tiers of circles and choir stalls behind the stage. Sound is excellent almost everywhere, which is unusual — a cheap seat here beats an expensive one in most arenas.

Arriving on the night

Thirty minutes is enough. Esplanade MRT (Circle Line) and City Hall (North–South / East–West) both connect by sheltered walkway; from Marina Bay hotels, the waterfront promenade walk takes 10–15 minutes. Latecomers are held until a suitable break for classical performances.

After the encore

Crowds of this size disperse without drama. City Hall and Esplanade stations are minutes away, taxis queue at the Esplanade Drive stand, and the bay-front walk back to Marina Bay Sands or Raffles Place is pleasant and well lit — often the nicest way to end the night.
