The story
Orchard Road is Singapore's premier shopping boulevard, named for the nutmeg and fruit plantations that lined it in the 19th century. From the 1970s onward it was transformed into a glittering retail corridor, and today its 2.2-kilometre stretch is packed with malls, department stores, hotels and flagship boutiques. It is especially famous for its elaborate Christmas light-up each year.
