About omakase restaurants in Singapore
Omakase means 'I leave it to you', and the format is a chef cooking a sequence to their own judgement in front of a small counter. Singapore has an unusual amount of it for a city this size, largely because it imports both the fish and, frequently, the chefs — several counters here are branches or protégés of Tokyo establishments.
The price range is extraordinary, from around a hundred dollars to several times that, and price tracks the fish and the counter's size more than skill. Sushi is the most common form, but tempura, sukiyaki and yakitori omakase all exist here and are worth knowing about before assuming the word means raw fish.
What to look for
- Lunch is frequently the same kitchen at a materially lower price, with a shorter sequence.
- Eat each piece the moment it is placed. The chef has timed the rice temperature, and waiting undoes it.
- Tell them about allergies and dislikes when booking, not on the night. The sequence is planned in advance.
Why we count instead of ranking
Every food list is one person’s palate on one visit. That is not a flaw — it is what makes food writing worth reading — but it does mean a single list tells you more about the writer than about the field. Counting across 5 of them cancels out individual preference and leaves the venues that different people, eating on different days, arrived at independently.
It is a deliberately narrow claim. This page does not tell you which omakase restaurant is best; it tells you which ones Singapore’s food press keeps returning to, and exactly how many times. Where the count is close, the honest answer is that the field is close — and we would rather show you that than manufacture a ranking to hide it.
What are the best omakase restaurants in Singapore?
Across 5 independently published Singapore lists of the best omakase restaurants, Sushi Masa by Ki-setsu is named most often — on 4 of them. Sushi Yujo (3) and An Omakase (2) follow.
How is this omakase restaurants ranking put together?
We read 5 independently published Singapore food lists, took only the venue names, and counted how many of them named each venue. 54 distinct venues were named in total; the 6 shown here appeared on at least 2. We do not taste, rank or accept payment for placement, and no source's writing is reproduced — every list we counted is linked below.
Are these omakase restaurants verified as real businesses?
Each venue is cross-checked against NEA's licensed-premises register, but hawker stalls are usually licensed under the operator's own name rather than the stall name, so few match automatically. We show a hygiene grade only where the match is confident, and nothing at all where it is not.
Is omakase always sushi?
No. It means the chef chooses the courses, and Singapore has tempura, sukiyaki, yakitori and even vegetarian shojin omakase alongside the more common sushi counters. Sushi is simply the most numerous.
