Gateway Theatre: the concert-goer’s guide

A modern Bukit Merah theatre and black box, off the tourist trail and easy to reach.

Gateway Theatre on Jalan Bukit Merah is a purpose-built performing arts venue with a main auditorium and a black-box studio, used for concerts, musicals, dance and community productions. It sits in a residential stretch of Bukit Merah between Redhill and Tiong Bahru.

This is a local venue rather than a tourist one, and that's the appeal: shows here are smaller, cheaper and often in Mandarin, Malay or Tamil as well as English. The neighbourhood around it — Tiong Bahru's cafés and market, Redhill's hawker centre — is far more interesting than the venue's address suggests.
