The story
Thian Hock Keng is one of Singapore's oldest and most important Hokkien temples, built in the 1840s on Telok Ayer Street, which once ran along the waterfront before land reclamation. Dedicated to Mazu, the Taoist goddess of the sea, it was where early Chinese immigrants gave thanks for a safe voyage. Built in traditional southern Chinese style without nails, its intricate carvings and dragon motifs make it a celebrated heritage monument.
