The Star Theatre: the concert-goer’s guide

A 5,000-seat theatre stacked on top of a mall at one-north — comfortable, dry, easy.

The Star Theatre occupies the upper floors of The Star, a 2012 mixed-use building above The Star Vista mall in the one-north research district at Buona Vista. With 5,000 seats it is the largest purpose-built theatre in Singapore, and it takes the tier of touring act that sells more than a concert hall but less than an arena.

Everything about the venue is indoors and vertical: you arrive at mall level, ride escalators up through the atrium, and enter the auditorium from above. That makes it one of the easiest venues in the city for anyone travelling with kids or worried about rain — Buona Vista MRT is a short sheltered walk away, and the mall's restaurants are directly under your seat.

How the seating works

Stalls plus two balcony levels, all seated. It's a wide house, so far side seats in the stalls can be steeply angled to the stage; the front of the first balcony is often the best value in the room.

Arriving

Thirty to forty-five minutes before showtime is plenty. Come up from Buona Vista MRT (East–West and Circle lines) through the covered link to The Star Vista, then take the escalators to your level. Doors are usually 30–60 minutes before curtain.

After the show

The crowd empties down through the mall atrium into Buona Vista station, which handles it well — this is the least painful exit of any large venue in Singapore. Trains on both lines run until roughly midnight; if your show runs long, the bus stops on North Buona Vista Road and Commonwealth Avenue West are alternatives.

Things worth knowing

  • The theatre entrance is several floors above the mall — allow ten minutes inside the building itself.
  • Bag and drink rules are enforced at the auditorium doors, not at the mall entrance.
  • This is a seated theatre: standing at your seat is often discouraged by ushers at non-pop events.

Common questions

What is the nearest MRT station to The Star Theatre?
Buona Vista MRT Station is the closest station, about 3 minutes' walk from the venue. One-north MRT Station (14 min) is the usual alternative when the nearest station is congested after a show.
How do I get to The Star Theatre from Changi Airport?
Take East-West Line to Tanah Merah, then East-West Line to Buona Vista. About 56 minutes with 1 transfer, roughly S$2.42.
Where should I stay for a concert at The Star Theatre?
6 hotels in our directory are within a measured walk of the venue — the closest is Park Avenue Rochester, about 6 minutes on foot. One-north and Buona Vista have business hotels; Holland Village is the nicer neighbourhood to sleep in nearby. Because Buona Vista is on both the East–West and Circle lines, staying in the city (Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Orchard) and riding out is perfectly practical — it's a direct train from Orchard via Buona Vista's interchange.
Where can I eat before a concert at The Star Theatre?
Ghim Moh Road Blk 20 is the closest hawker centre, about 8 minutes' walk with 72 stalls. The Star Vista itself is the answer for most people — several floors of restaurants and cafés directly below the auditorium, open before and after the show. For hawker food, Ghim Moh Market is a short walk across one-north and Holland Village Market is a little beyond it — both far cheaper than the mall.
How do I get home after a concert at The Star Theatre?
